RF-S is Canon’s APS-C line within the RF mount, introduced in 2022 alongside the R7 and R10. The lenses are physically small and priced for kit use.

A short list

The native RF-S range is still thin: a couple of standard zooms, a wide zoom and a telephoto zoom. Sigma and Tamron have begun releasing APS-C lenses in RF mount, which fills the obvious gap at the fast-prime end.

You are not limited to RF-S

Full-frame RF lenses mount and work perfectly on RF-S bodies — you just get the 1.6× crop. For portraits on an R10, an RF 50mm f/1.8 (80mm equivalent) is often a better answer than waiting for a native RF-S prime. Filter for Mount: Canon RF as well as RF-S when you are shopping.

Adapted EF-S and EF lenses work too, which is where most of the affordable choice still lives.
